New Rail Noise Act

In order to make all cars quieter, the Federal Government passed the Railway Noise Protection Act in the year under review, which prohibits the operation of noisy freight cars from the 2020/2021 timetable change. In addition to the freight cars of DB Group, more than 100,000 other freight cars of foreign and domestic TOCs are in service in Germany. DB Netz AG’s noise-based train-path pricing system (Lärmabhängiges Trassenpreissystem; LaTPS) is used to encourage owners to convert their freight cars. Despite BMVI and EU funding, the conversion involves considerable additional costs for the TOCs and all freight car owners.
