Recycling rate at a high level

Particularly in construction and in the maintenance of the rail infrastructure, a large quantity of different resources are used. We intend to transform our waste management process from an optimized disposal management system into a modern resource management system. Our goal is to maintain our recycling rate at a high level of at least 95%. While we are already achieving a high rate in construction waste, we want to further increase this rate, especially in the area of municipal waste. In addition, we plan to increase the use of recycled materials, and extend the service life of our production equipment, including vehicles. In doing so, we are contributing to the increased use of secondary raw materials in society as a whole. We are also protecting natural resources, since the production of recycled materials is better for the environment than sourcing primary raw materials.

In the year under review, about 0.3 million t less waste was produced. The volume of construction waste fell slightly, while the decline in municipal waste was significant at about 14%.

The slight improvement in the recycling rate in the year under review resulted in particular from a lower proportion of hazardous waste and the even better utilization of the recycling potential for construction waste.

Through specific measures such as selective dismantling and contractual commitment of sorting and recycling facilities, we would like to maintain the share of recyclable waste at a high level and further reduce the proportion of waste that is destined for disposal or incineration. For ex­­ample, we are currently working on a strategy for disposing of mixed municipal waste with the aim of recycling the materials contained in it to the greatest degree possible. This will significantly reduce the environmental impact.

The introduction of a uniform waste management system served to harmonize data collection. The European business of DB Schenker has seen an increase in volumes of municipal waste and other waste.

Two divisions had a significant influence on the development of volumes of construction waste. In the case of both the Stuttgart – Ulm project (–0.3 million t) and at DB Netz AG (+0.7 million t), construction waste was slightly changed compared to the previous year, with the recycling rate increasing.
