Recycling of ballast and concrete ties
For regular replacement and maintenance of the ballast bed, we have set up a materials cycle for ballast, concrete ties No. 73 and tracks. About 4 to 5 million tons of old and worn-out materials are removed from the network annually and then almost the same volume is build into the network again.
About 1.6 million tons of ballast are mechanically removed on-site annually by track-bound ballast cleaning machines or mobile processing plants and immediately reused. This significantly reduces not only the required amount of new ballast but also transport expense and CO₂ emissions. For the most part, the rest of the material is processed into recycled ballast No. 51 in an external certified disposal facility for DB Group or prepared as gravel or crushed sand for roadbuilding. A total of 4.1 million tons of ballast were used in the year under review, 0.9 million tons of which were recycled ballast.
IT systems for transparent processing anddocumentation of waste disposal
For us, waste IT is a significant component in waste disposal management, both in terms of legally secure disposal and documentation, and when it comes to detecting potential for optimization. For this reason, we have set up and standardized our waste IT.
Saving paper with mobile tickets
14.7 million mobile tickets were reserved through DB Navigator in the year under review. On average, that is equal to about 40,000 reservations per day, with growth of 47% over the previous year. By using mobile instead of printed tickets, our customers saved 72 tons of paper during this time period.
