Materiality is our benchmark
We are working on issues that are material to us and our stakeholders. In our 2016 stakeholder survey, we identified and prioritized issues and examined them in more detail in the year under review. The central ambitions of our stakeholders are to make sure DB Group is fit for the future and to secure its performance capabilities, as well as addressing topics relating to security and the environment. Digitalization and innovation, as well as performance capability were defined as material topics for the first time in 2016 and were addressed partly through measures put in place as part of our Railway of the Future (Departure Economic), Digital Rail for Germany and Smart Cities programs, and partly by our newly established competence Center digitalization and the executive center transformation. The material issue of security is being addressed through the strengthened focus of our activities relating to employee safety and cyber security. The new climate target is our response to the issue of climate protection, which has been classified as material.
For the purposes of simplification, we have consolidated the top issues arising in our 2016 stakeholder survey and our DB2020+ top targets into nine material sustainability topics (DB 01 to DB 09). The impacts of the topics both within and outside DB Group are analyzed.
The group target system forms the basis for the selection of the key figures relevant to management. Further topics are reported based on an internal assessment of their significance. They include social commitments, air quality control, nature conservation and supply chain.
