2017 Integrated Report – Departure into a new era

Our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted in September 2015. The 17 SDGs cover environmental, social and economic objectives of sustainable development. With the SDGs, the United Nations has agreed on a World Future Treaty that defines a common Agenda 2030.

DB Group is expressly committed to the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact. For this reason, we also feel committed to the objectives of the Agenda 2030 and the SDGs.

Achieving the ambitious objectives for 2030 will require the commitment and cooperation of all stakeholders: business, politics, science and civil society. For this reason, we also intend to intensify our dialog with stakeholders on the SDGs. The Federal Government’s national sustainability strategy, which was adopted on the basis of the SDGs in early 2017, is also an important basis.

In the previous year, we studied the content of the SDGs in detail and prioritized six that are strategically aligned to the top issues raised in our 2016 stakeholder survey and to the DB2020+ top targets. We believe that these are the six areas where our products and services can exert the greatest influence. They are:

  • SDG 3 (Good health and well-being),
  • SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth),
  • SDG 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure),
  • SDG 11 (Sustainable cities and communities),
  • SDG 12 (Responsible consumption and production) and
  • SDG 13 (Climate action).

In the year under review, we also partnered with the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the UN Action Campaign, Canon and econsense, among others, to implement communication programs and to plan further action in 2018. Our aim is to encourage our stakeholders to commit to the SDGs. One such measure was the prominent communication of the SDGs in the Train to Bonn (Departure Environmental) – the special train used to bring the German delegation to the 23rd World Climate Conference in 2017 (COP23). A photo competition entitled “We design sustainable cities” was organized for all DB employees not just to inform them about the SDGs, but also to inspire them to get involved. Communication focusing on the SDGs will continue in 2018, with particular emphasis on our customers. We want to spread the message of the SDGs throughout society – through explicit communication of the same to our customers, for example.
